Safe space through breaking
Since 2010, Slum Dance Africa has served as a dynamic cultural institution that unites East and Central Africa through breaking and contemporary African dance.
It was founded by Inuka Co-Director Victor Odhiambo, who wanted free programming for Kibera youth following Kenya’s 2007 post-election violence. Dance became a tool for peaceful coexistence, healing, and capacity building.
Today SDA runs weekly classes, public performances, and an annual conference/competition that draws top dancers from Uganda, Congo, Europe, Tanzania, Rwanda, and Burundi.

First Term 2026: average attendance ~39 youth per class — among Inuka’s most consistent weekly gatherings.
Regional eliminations → Nairobi finals
Slum Dance Africa’s regional breakdance eliminations take Victor and his team across East Africa each year. Finalists earn an all-expense-paid trip to Nairobi for workshops with an international dancer and the final competition.
That circuit has helped establish breaking culture across the region — and keeps Kibera at the center of the map.

Questions about Slum Dance Africa
Yes. Studio programs are free for Kibera youth and community members at St. George Orthodox Church.
Children and youth — majority under 18 — with parental consent for minors. All abilities welcome.
